What is Smart Specialization?

This current of thought is popular in Europe, the United States and other regions of the world as a basis for supporting industrial and innovation public policy.

Laboratorio

The combination of cluster mapping, value network mapping, Economic Complexity, RIS3and CEDS/BREDS methodologies allows for "precision shots" in sustainable development strategies. Underpinned by the identification of smart specializations, the iCluster Ecosystem offers valuable guidance for high-impact entrepreneurshipboosting micro, small and medium-sized companies´ growth under a global vision, since it defines the vocations, productive, and innovation capabilities of a region ("think global, act local").

The iCluster smart specializations strategy focused on the following purposes:

  • Establish a common global class language

  • Understand the regional environment and align strategies

  • Provide feedback on industrial and innovation public policy at the regional level

  • Make efficient use of data mapping and the Innovation Agenda

  • Interact effectively with the ICT sector

  • Focus on talent development

  • Identify current and future opportunities in global value chains

  • Promote private investment in high potential sectors

  • Identify and promote entrepreneurship and innovation projects

The iCluster Ecosystem supported the co-creation of knowledge models through open innovation methodologies that enabled a knowledge base to intuitively disseminate smart specializations. The model created by iCluster for nine states of Mexico participating in the iCluster project can be extended to the entire country and other regions, analyzing the local characterization in each case.
