What is an Innovation Cluster?
Digital Transformation of a dynamic concentration of related industries (or clusters) that is defined based on internationally accepted methodologies and datasets and that operates without geopolitical borders through a virtual knowledge network to link stakeholders in a contextual way and aligned to technological and market trends.
The iCluster semantic framework considers two internationally recognized knowledge structures:
Technology platforms and clusters. These structures can be conceptually aligned under the fundamental principles of smart specialization. Europe identifies its specializations using RIS3 and the United States identifies theirs mainly based on the location quotients that link to its cluster map. To identify Mexico's specializations, the iCluster Ecosystem made use of a combination of RIS3, location quotients, and other datasets through data mapping. To promote the development of productive projects, the innovation Cluster (iCluster) framework identifies the intersection of technological trends with clusters, associating the regional existing and potential capabilities through a Strategic Innovation Agenda.

The iCluster studies compiled the concentrations of related industries and the regional specializations in the iCluster Ecosystem knowledge base, associating economic activities, cluster definitions and lines/priorities of the Innovation Agenda in the knowledge model.

Through the Technology platform work, the Creative Industries, Industry 4.0, Smart Cities, and Sustainable Energy strategic innovation lines were defined, identifying intersections with the components of the value network, impacting the cluster´s competitiveness, associating the regional capabilities with market requirements and technological trends, and enabling stakeholders' contextual linkages via knowledge networks.
