Data Mapping

The MUSEIC iCluster Subcommittee collaborated with the organizations responsible for cluster definitions and North American industry classifications, using the official Economic Census datasets for the data mapping work that guided the iCluster Sustainable Development strategies.

Cluster Mapping

A cluster map is key in the evaluation of industry sectors, since it represents facts associated with the concentration of regional economic activities. It is the first step for industrial policy sustained by these facts, and a valuable tool to attract investment, link stakeholders and boost the region's competitiveness.

Cluster mapping analysis was based on the  Sistema de Clasificación Industrial de América del Norte (SCIAN 2013) of Mexico and the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS 2012) of the United States and Canada (NAICS 2012), using the Harvard cluster mapping methodology.

Mexican Cluster Map

The Mexican Cluster Map was an outstanding deliverable of the iCluster Project, receiving feedback from diverse public-private organizations and aligning its structure and content with the United States and Canada cluster maps.

The launch of the Mexican cluster map was made known in June 2016 by the White House as a result of HLED binational work.

Value Network Mapping

The analysis of value networks took place through the design of knowledge models and the use of the Value Network Mapping Methodology yielding: (a) identification of binational clusters based on the regional economic activity classes and according to their weight, specialization, dynamics and competitiveness, (b) classification of establishments in clusters, (c) identification of national and binational industrial corridors and, (d) participation of establishments in value networks.

This analysis extended at a municipal level including, among other datasets, the Input-Output Matrix import-export and Harmonized System codes, and economic complexity.

Trinational Compatibility

The MUSEIC iCluster Subcommittee collaborated in 2013-2015 with the US Economic Development Administration (EDA),  the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness (ISC) of the Harvard Business School, and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography of Mexico (INEGI) in the development of the Mexican cluster map, ensuring compatibility with the US cluster map. It also collaborated in 2016-2017 with the Innovation, Science and Economic Development of Canada (ISED) to ensure compatibility of the cluster maps of the US and Mexico with the cluster map of Canada.

The datasets used by iCluster for both cluster and value network mappings are based on compatible methodologies used in the North American economic region.
